Dramatic IVD Growth
1. What is the growth rate of the Chinese IVD Market?
The Chinese IVD market continues to grow 15%-20% per year and is now a $3.2 billion market. By country it now ranks third largest after USA and Japan.
For the next five years, annual growth is expected to continue at this rate.
2. Why this dramatic growth?
There are two fundamental reasons: prosperity and the stimulus package
Prosperity
The Chinese GDP has been growing 8%+ for almost a decade. Approximately one million Chinese that are entering the middle class each year are in a position to afford healthcare.
The Stimulus Package
As part of the Chinese stimulus package, the Chinese government spent $120 billion by 2010 to establish universal healthcare for the country's 1.3 billion people. The money has been directed toward improving health insurance and raising standards in public hospitals. Long-term plans include the construction of 400 hospitals each year for the next 8 years.
3. What is the China International Medical Equipment Fair (CMEF)?
In its 64th edition, CMEF showcases Asia’s widest collection of international and local manufacturers of medical devices for hospitals and laboratories. There are two editions of CMEF each year which attract approximately 50,000 visitors. CMEF is organized through a joint venture between Reed Expositions (UK) and Sinopharm Exhibitions (China). The joint venture company is Reed Sinopharm

6. When are the shows each year?
There are two shows (editions) per year; spring and fall. The spring show is anchored in Shenzhen which is 90 minutes by surface transportation from Hong Kong. The fall show travels to different healthcare technology locations throughout China. As business travel is limited to most Chinese, the fall show brings technology to these “areas of excellence”1.
1Regions having a critical mass of technology universities and companies.
7. What is CMEF IVD?
CMEF IVD is an area on the exhibit floor reserved for IVD companies. It is located in the same hall as the international section (country pavilions).
Introduced at the spring 2009 show, the IVD pavilion is an area where smaller companies can exhibit in 9 sqm (100 sq ft) stands.
8.How many CMEF visitors are interested in diagnostics?
Based on survey of visitors to the spring 2011 edition, 11.7% (8,500) of the visitors have an interest in “Lab and Clinical Testing Devices”.
9.How many IVD companies routinely exhibit?
10. What are the exhibiting options?
Exhibiting options include the main floor and the IVD Pavilion. The IVD Pavilion Area (9 sqm stands) is close to the multinational companies (Abbott, Roche, Beckman Coulter, Sysmex, etc.) and the International Area (country pavilions).

Exhibitors who construct their stand can use any company they wish to use. Companies can contract through the CMEF organizers, Reed Sinopharm, or select their own stand constructors. Generally speaking, labor costs are about 25% of charges in Europe and the US. For shell scheme exhibitors, you are able to install your own equipment, hang posters, etc.
12. Will I need a translator? If so, what is the cost?
If your company does not have a bilingual agent or employee present, a translator is a necessity. Depending on the level of competence needed, the cost per day is between $50 for a hostess to $200 for a skilled translator.

13. What are travel and hotel accommodations?
For the April show, those traveling internationally usually fly into Hong Kong which is 60 to 90 minutes from Shenzhen depending on the time of day. During the show, obtaining a taxi during is next to impossible. Unless you have dependable transportation, such as shuttle buses to and from your hotel, or your hotel is near a metro station, it is recommended that you stay at one of the hotels within walking distance from the Shenzhen Exhibition Center.
For the fall show, Orient Explorer coordinates the hotels as well and can offer you a variety of choices, all acceptable by western standards.

14. What should be known about doing business in China?
As with any international business experience, it is important to know and observe the country’s cultural habits. If your exhibit team has not previously traveled to China and you do not have access to formal training, it is highly recommended that books on Chinese business culture be reviewed. One of the better books is “Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands – Asian Edition” by Terri Morrison and Wayne Conway (Adams Media). Another excellent book is “Asian Business Customs and Manners” by Mary Murray Bosrock (Meadowbrook Press).
